Description

Our popular Waitangi day resource is now available in a pack for our lower primary learners!

This 25+ page A4 pack is designed to support your classroom discussions about the Treaty of Waitangi. It was created to address the lack of easy to use resources for LOWER primary aged children (Years 0,1 & 2) You can mix and match from the large selection of pages to best meet the needs of your class. Many of the pages and activities in this pack are easily adapted for differing abilities – complete as a whole class mini lessons, with a buddy/small group or individually.

 Included in this resource are:

• One cut mini book (plus instructions) containing basic facts about Waitangi
• 6 class challenges to complete – find and mark Waitangi on a map of New Zealand, Find out who in the class has a birthday in February! Whose birth date is the closest to February the 6th? How far away is the town you live in from the Treaty grounds in Waitangi etc.
• Cut and paste the pictures to match the Waitangi facts
• Waitangi day Can/Has/Is writing template
• Waitangi day true or false questions (plus answers)

• Things to think about – There are both celebrations and protests at Waitangi every year. Why do you think that is? The signing of the Treaty of Waitangi is a very important event in NZ’s history, but not very many people know much about it. Why do you think that is?

• What questions do you have about Waitangi Day? Record your ‘open’ questions and find an expert to answer them!
• Blast from the past……The treaty of Waitangi was signed in 1840. What do you think the town you live in now looked like then? Draw or write about your ideas.
• Design your own Treaty (Does your class or school have rules that everyone agrees to follow? What happens if you don’t follow the rules? Make up some rules for the children who sit at your table. If they agree to follow your rules, get them to sign the bottom of your treaty)
• New Zealand’s official flags – information and colour by number activity for: The flag of the United Tribes of New Zealand, The current NZ flag & the Maori Tino Rangatiratanga flag.
• Use the template provided to design your own flag for NZ that you think would best represent NZ and all its people
